What happened to the idea of "Vampires"!? They used to be so cool but now..!?

The sookie stackhouse series and the vampire diaries series were both written in the nineties before twilight. And their respective shows true blood and the vampire diaries are quite good. The vampires in true blood are not all good. One vampire called bill claims to love the heroine nuts still does bad things to her.
