Do Americans really not know what socialism is or what?

Some don't and others pretend that they don't. The problem is that the term "socialist" has been used by right-wing propagandists in an attempt to scare the gullible and criticize every government action that the right-wingers don't like. We wouldn't even be discussing it if that weren't the case.
