Can you take money into India?

You are not allowed to take any rupees into India. Indians may take 5000 in or out. Travellers cheques often get better rates than cash (I don't know why). Credit and debit cards are an easy method of exchange, and there are ATM in all large towns. Many traders cannot process chip and pin cards common in Europe, so ask if the can first. Check with your card issuer for costs and you may need to tell them about you destination and dates of travel before you go.
